5 Epic ways Keshi made History in Nigeria

As the world continues to mourn the 
former Super Eagles Coach Stephen 
Keshi, many have chosen to take 
solace in the indelible marks Keshi left 
first as a player and then as a coach. 
Keshi was indeed a pacesetter and a 
pioneering achiever in many spheres. 
Here five key achievements by the 54- 
year-old respected soccer icon. 
USA 1994 World Cup 
Keshi was Nigeria’s first captain to the 
FIFA World Cup. After years of near 
misses, Nigeria finally qualified for the 
prestigious FIFA World Cup in 1994. 
Keshi undoubtedly played a huge role 
in that historic feat, playing in six of 
the eight qualifying matches. 
His man-of-the match exploit in the 
decisive away game against Algeria 
which ended 1-1 is fresh in the minds 
of many. In that game, Keshi 
marshalled the Eagles defence and 
helped Nigeria break the jinx and 
finally feature in football’s biggest 
showpiece. 
AFCON trophy 
Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2012 
Africa Cup of Nations and that saw the 
bringing in of Keshi to handle the 
national team. 
Though the appointment of Keshi was 
met with resentment in some quarters, 
it turned out to be a worthy choice as 
Nigeria’s 19-year AFCON trophy fiasco 
was ended by Keshi. 
Having first ensured that the Eagles staged a return 
to the continental football tournament, Keshi against 
all odds went on to mastermind Nigeria’s third 
AFCON triumph, beating the likes of Ivory Coast and 
Mali en-route being crowned as African champions 
for the third time. Earlier AFCON wins were 
achieved with expatriate coaches. 
Togo at World Cup 
Keshi took his trade across the border to Togo 
where he shocked the world, qualifying the Hawks 
of Togo for their first ever world cup tournament in 
2006. 
He was able to achieve this enviable feat despite his 
team being tagged underdogs in their qualifying 
group. Keshi qualified Togo for Germany 2006 
against all odds from a group that consisted of bigger 
teams like Senegal, Mali and teams like Liberia, 
Congo and Zambia. 
Sadly Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup that 
same year, after losing out to Angola. 
Nigeria 2014 CHAN qualification 
After failing to make the first two editions of the 
African Nations Champions in 2009 and 2011 in Cote 
d’Ivoire and Sudan respectively, Keshi made another 
first as he led the home-based Eagles to the 2014 
edition in South Africa for the very first time. 
To secure a place to the 2014 CHAN, the home-based 
Eagles overcame Cote d’Ivoire 4-3 on aggregate in the 
final round of the qualifiers. 
With gallant display, Nigeria narrowly missed out on 
making it to the finals in their maiden appearance 
and settled for Bronze after beating Zimbabwe in 
their place game 
Nigeria’s first World Cup win 
Prior to the Super Eagles group games at the Brazil 
2014 World Cup, victories by the country’s national 
team at the World Cup came under expatriates, 
namely, Clemence Westerhof and Bora Milotinovic 
(Westerhof, USA 1994:3-0 against Bulgaria, 2-0 
against Greece and Milotinovic, France 1998: 3-2 
against Spain, 1-0 against Bulgaria). 
But against Bosnia-Herzegovina, a goal from Osaze 
Odemwingie, secured a 1-0 win for the Eagles. The 
goal was the Eagles’ fifth overall since making their 
debut in 1994.

Its a national shame: Read what Commonwealth doctors are saying about Buhari’s medical trip

The vice president of the Commonwealth Medical 
Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele has condemned 
President Buhari’s medical trip to London 
– He said it was tragic blot on Nigeria’s collective 
professional and National image 
– According to him, the president failed to show 
leadership by example by not staying back to receive 
medical treatment in Nigeria 
– He said receiving treatment in Nigeria would 
inspire confidence in the health sector 
Dr. Enabulele Osahon, the vice president of 
Commonwealth Medical Association has expressed 
disappointment over President Muhammadu Buhari’s 
medical trip to London for an Ear, Nose and Throat 
(E.N.T) infection. 
He said it was a national shame of immense 
proportions that the president had to be 
recommended for foreign medical care despite the 
presence of over 250 ENT specialists and professors 
in Nigeria, as well as a National Ear Centre located in 
Kaduna state, Vanguard reports. 
Buhari departs Nigeria for London on a 10-day 
vacation

He said: “ I am very constrained to state that this 
foreign medical trip flies in the face of the federal 
government’s earlier declaration of her resolve to halt 
the embarrassing phenomenon of outward medical 
tourism, which as at the end of the year 2013 had led 
to a humongous capital flight of about $1billion 
dollars, particularly from expenses incurred by 
political and public office holders and their 
accompanying aides, whose foreign medical trips 
most of which are unnecessary, were financed with 
tax payers’ resources .” 
Osahon noted that most of the public and political 
office holders who seek foreign medical care abroad 
are handled by Nigerian trained doctors in foreign 
lands particularly in the United Kingdom which has 
over 3000 Nigerian trained medical doctors, United 
States of America with over 5000 Nigerian trained 
medical doctors, amongst other foreign countries. 
He said most of the doctors emigrated because of 
government’s perennial failure to address certain 
issues such as poor working conditions and health 
facilities, insecurity, unpredictable and poor funding 
of Residency Training Programme, uncompetitive 
wages and job dissatisfaction. 
According to him, Buhari has lost a golden 
opportunity to assert his change mantra by not 
leading by example and staying back to receive 
medical treatment in Nigeria. 
Osahin said receiving treatment in Nigeria would 
inspire confidence in the health sector which 
currently boasts of medical experts that can 
favourably compare with medical experts anywhere in 
the world.

Breaking New: Jonathan Condemn exile Story

ABUJA —Former President Goodluck Jonathan has 
denied a newspaper publication that he returned 
last Wednesday from Cote d’Ivoire, a country the 
paper claimed he allegedly considered going into 
exile, describing the publication as malicious. The 
publication had insisted that former President, 
Goodluck Jonathan had gone on self-exile for fear 
of being arrested. 
However, dismissing the allegation as false, 
insensitive and tendentious, the former President 
warned newspapers to desist from reckless 
sensationalism. Dr. Jonathan, who stressed that he 
returned from the United Kingdom and not Cote 
d’Ivoire as erroneously claimed in the publication, 
however, reiterated that he “has no intention of 
turning his back on Nigeria, a homeland he served 
diligently as President, to the best of his abilities.” 
A statement, yesterday, by Mr Ikechukwu Eze, media 
aide to the former President, said: “Our attention 
has been drawn to a spurious publication of June 4, 
2016 entitled ‘Buhari Holds Secret Meeting with 
Jonathan, Niger Delta Tops Agenda’. 
‘’We had thought that the newspaper only set out to 
report a routine meeting between the former 
President and President Muhammadu Buhari, while 
speculating on the agenda just as newspapers are 
wont to freely do, especially as no statement was 
issued by either of the parties. 
“We are, however, dismayed that this newspaper, 
unlike other newspapers, went beyond this brief 
and turned the report into a veil for its vain and 
futile attempt to justify its earlier ‘exclusive’ report, 
on a speculated Jonathan’s self-exile to Cote 
D’Ivoire. 
“ We are inclined to proclaim straightaway that this 
claim or any insinuation to Dr. Jonathan’s 
contemplation of exile is not only false, tendentious 
but inciting. Isn’t it reprehensible that the only 
truth in the newspaper is that former President 
Jonathan paid a visit to President Buhari, while the 
rest of the content are bogus insinuations and 
fabrications?" 
“ It is surprising that, rather than apologise to the 
former President and the nation for an obvious 
gaffe, this newspaper continues to pursue this 
illusory line of thought, which achieves nothing but 
mislead its readers, even after the former President 
had clearly stated that he never, at any point in 
time, considered going into exile. 
‘’We are persuaded to believe that the newspaper is 
pursuing a yet-to-be-declared agenda, especially 
after a call earlier made, out of respect, to the 
newspaper by the former President, to offer a 
clarification, was deliberately misrepresented, to 
agree with this premeditated conclusion. 
“We are disappointed that a serious newspaper like 
this said newspaper could carelessly wager its 
reputation and encouraging perception, by 
submitting itself to such recklessness and needless 
sensationalism. We, therefore, seek to make the 
following assertions, as a means of stating the 
facts: 
“ We maintain as Dr. Jonathan has himself stated, 
that the former President has no intention of turning 
his back on Nigeria, a homeland he served 
diligently as President, to the best of his abilities. 
“ It is instructive to note that while the newspaper 
continues to insist that Jonathan came from Cote 
d’Ivoire, the former President actually returned to 
the country last Wednesday evening from London, 
after visiting many countries including United 
States, United Kingdom, Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire 
on a six-week long international engagements and 
speaking tour. 
“As a former President, Dr. Jonathan should be 
obliged the freedom to visit President Buhari, 
anytime he likes, to brief him on his international 
engagements and other commitments. ‘’We will like 
to advise media houses to desist from this fruitless 
predilection of Jonathan bashing, just because it is 
convenient, and in tune with the disposition in 
some quarters.”

Naija Delta Avengers: Ijaw Elder Provide Solution

Seigha Manija, the chairman of Niger Delta 
Nationalities Forum and member of Ijaw Elders’ Forum 
has advised President Muhammadu Buhari on what 
he should do to resolve the renewed militancy in the 
Niger Delta region. 
He speculated that the reduction of budgetary 
allocation to PAP from N60billion to N20billion in 
this 2016 budget, the near omission of the Lagos- 
Calabar rail project and the announcement that the 
Maritime University in the riverine Niger Delta has 
been cancelled may be part of the reasons why the 
new militant group is blowing up oil facilities in the 
Niger Delta region . 
Proferring solution on the way forward, he said the 
president should convene a Niger Delta youth summit 
and use the platform to assuage the fears of the 
people in the region. 
Manija also asked Buhari to pay former president 
Goodluck Jonathan a courtesy visit just to say thank 
you for respecting the wishes of the majority of 
voters during the 2015 presidential election. 
According to him, the government sees the Niger 
Delta Avengers as criminals just as many 
commentators do and the Avengers also see this 
government as wicked and undermining the Niger 
Delta region. 
He said the heavy presence of military men in the 
Niger Delta region is good and bad. 
“It is bad in the sense that the more the military 
come, the more the resolve of the youth or some 
criminals, who feel challenged to do their worst as a 
test of their capacity and knowledge of the 
environment. It is also good in the sense that it 
affords Nigerians from other region the opportunity to 
begin to appreciate the plight and challenges of the 
Niger Delta region ,” Manija said.

Naija Delta Avengers :APC blames PDP

The south south zone APC believes the PDP is 
responsible for the renewed militancy in the Niger 
Delta region 
– The party said the attacks were sponsored to 
distract Buhari’s government to avoid being 
prosecuted for their criminal activities while in 
government 
– The APC also condemned Biafra agitators for 
categorising south south as part of Biafra 
The south south zone of the All Progressives 
Congress (APC) has blamed the opposition Peoples 
Democratic Party (PDP), for the current attacks on oil 
installations in the Niger Delta region. 
The party said the attacks were sponsored to derail 
President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, 
Vanguard reports. 
This was contained in a communiqué issued by party 
leaders from the five states in the south south at the 
end of a stakeholders meeting in Benin City.

Ijaw Community Comdems Naija Delta Avengers

Leaders of Dibi Ijaw communities,Ogbinbiri Egbema 
clan in Warri North local government area in Delta 
State have condemned the incessant attack on oil 
facilities in their domain especially the recent June 
1 blowing up of Chevron oil wells RMP 23 and RMP 
24. 
This is contained in a statement made available to 
newsmen by the Dibi Ijaw communities Ogbinbiri 
Egbema clan chairman Mr. Ebi Eyenmi, Mr 
Darlington Lelekumor and others. They stated that 
the act believed to be perpetuated by the Nigerian 
Delta Avengers is totally unacceptable to the people 
of the clan. 
While condemning the nefarious activities of the 
Niger Delta Avengers embarking on destruction of 
oil facilities and wreaking havoc on the region's 
environment the leaders noted that the RMP 23 and 
RMP 24 are Chevron's swamp highest producing 
wells. 
Mr Ebi Eyenmi, Mr Darlington Lelekumor and others 
said the actions of the Avengers were not justifiable 
as it has resulted in total ecological devastation of 
the area. 
The leaders disclosed that the people of Dibi Ijaw 
communities, Ogbinbiri Egbema clan now live in fear 
and also face untold hardship as their only means 
of livelihood,which is fishing and farming have been 
totally destroyed by oil spills emanating from the 
activities of the said Niger Delta Avengers. 
They appealed to the state and federal government 
as well as relevant authorities to come to their aid 
and help in the clean up of the area as well as 
secure lives and property. 
They further advised the Niger Delta Avengers to 
explore consultation, negotiation and dialogue 
during misunderstanding with authorities and 
companies rather than resort to violence. 
Mr Eyenmi, Mr Lelekumor and others emphasised 
that the people of Dibi ijaw communities, Ogbinbiri 
Egbema clan are peace loving and law abiding 
citizens. 
It would be recalled that the Niger Delta Avengers in 
the past few weeks have consistently blown up oil 
facilities in the Niger Delta region, while the federal 
government has also set up security operatives to 
the area to checkmate the illegal bombing of oil 
facilities in the region.

Graduate Almost Died after Joining Agbero for the sake of No Job

This is unbelievable! No wonder a lot of people 
are carrying placards seeking employment, even 
the ones who have jobs don’t even know the day 
they would be sacked. What is Nigeria turning 
into? 
What you are about to read, as shared by 
Haruspice’ Musings, is the plight of a Nigerian 
who was a First Class graduate in a foreign 
university and returned home to look for job. 
Please read: 
“I have been feeling sore since yesterday 
following a heart-breaking scene I witnessed at 
the popular Area 1 Park. Struggling to stop rains 
of punches on his face was a young guy in his 
30s. He was being mercilessly mobbed by two 
other guys who were cursing, using all sorts of 
obscenities. 
I don’t know want moved me sha, but I had to 
alight from my car in rescue of this guy… 
I managed to stop the guys from their vicious 
dexterities on this guy but not without getting a 
slight scratch on my left ear. In between shoving, 
I managed to push this guy into my car as I 
drove away to a distant into safety. I could hear 
the guys shouting after us, threatening to end his 
life if he dares return to join them. Distant away 
to safety, I asked the visibly shaken guy what the 
problem was and thus went into a heart 
shattering narrative that left me perpetually sore. 
‘My brother, what you just witnessed was one of 
the trials of life oh. Sitting with you here is a 
first class graduate of the University of 
Greenwich, London, UK. (September, 2011 – July, 
2014) BSc (Hons.) Business Information Systems. 
I am jobless and stranded. I came into Abuja 
yesterday for an interview; I finished the 
interview and ran out of cash. Because I didn’t 
want to be seen as a beggar, I decided to join this 
guys calling for passengers. In three hours, I 
made N800. So I decided to gather at least N2000 
that can take me back to Lagos. That was when 
these guys pounced on me, demanding that I 
register as a union member with N5000. I told 
them my predicament but they insisted on taking 
my phone. 
‘My name is Abimbola Kareem, married with two 
kids from Lagos state. I’m not just a first class 
product oh, but a proficient person. I am a highly 
dedicated Business Systems Analyst with working 
knowledge of Business Intelligence, Web and 
Information Systems development and general 
products marketing. My understanding of system 
analysis got me the scholarship from the NNPC to 
study abroad. My brother, I came back and still 
can’t get a job oh.’ 
He saw the tears in my eyes and he too joined in 
the cry. It was an emotional time for me. In my 
car is a total stranger pouring out his heart to 
me. I stopped my tears and decided to give him 
hope. I could see hunger in him but he swore he 
wasn’t hungry. With the little stipends on me, I 
drove him to Jabi Park and he boarded a vehicle 
going to Lagos. 
We exchanged numbers and I left him more 
shattered. This morning, he called me to show 
his appreciation and his wife also prayed for me. 
I asked that he send his CV, which he eventually 
sent this evening. As I type this, I have his very 
rich CV with me. 
I don’t know where to take it to but I have this 
strong feeling that if I share this story here, 
someone somewhere may help somehow. We 
can’t afford to waste such a product.
